Most regular fuel has an 87 or 88 octane rating. Premium fuel has a higher octane rating — 93 in most states or 91 in California, where God hates gearheads.

Premium is higher octane, typically 91-93. Regular gas is lower octane, usually 87 or 88. High octane fuel can withstand higher compression than lower octane fuels. This is especially important for people that drive cars with high-compression engines, like some BMWs.

With the increase of fuel prices premium still remains $0.20 - $0.25 more than regular. Interestingly at $2.00/gallon the same was true. So currently its about 5% more for premium fuel than regular. Check your MPG closely as it may drop that much. Mine definitely does drop that much in my premium required car and the power loss in noticable.

The difference between gas stations is what they put into the gas. All stations get gas from the same location but the preservatives after the fact usually input by the driver is what people pay more for. I've always used Chervon when I want good gas. Since you need premium, I'd suggest getting a Costco or Sams Club card.

95 911 C2 - 99 A4 1.8T 4 years ago. if BMW says use 91, use 91. the engine was designed for it. the opposite (putting 91 in a car designed for 87) is a waste as you actually get less power and more cost. the exception here is when using small engines (mowers, etc) and want to avoid ethanol that is almost always in 87 but sometimes missing in 91 ...

That is utterly phony. “Premium” gas is used in high-compression engines, because it burns more slowly. This avoids pre-ignition, and engine knock. High-compression engines are more powerful, because the power obtained from burning gasoline is greater when the fuel-air mixture is more compressed.

But of course, BMW E90 325i and 328i also have their own set of flaws. One of them is the VANOS which was BMW’s V-TEC equivalent. It modulated the engine’s valves for better fuel economy and boosting power.

The octane is one thing, the other aspect to premium fuels is the detergent package, of which in premium gas there is more of and better - that may or may not be of importance, but long-term usage of premium gas in theory should help minimize the buildup of deposits/carbon/sludge on valves and engine internals.

2019 BMW 2 Series. U.S. News Score: 8.7/10 | Average Price: $30,994 - $50,734. The 2 Series is something of a callback to BMW’s earlier days of purist driving at its best. It is a straightforward four-passenger coupe (or convertible) with a conventional “three-box” exterior design.
