Gases Used for MIG Welding. In MIG welding, several gases can be mixed to create a reliable shield. These gases are as follows: Argon; Carbon dioxide; Nitrogen; Oxygen ; Helium; Argon gas for MIG welding is the most commonly used and mixed gas among these gases. Argon is a type of inert gas that ensures

Argon Welding Gas Does Not Expire Most of the time, argon 4.6 is the type that you are likely to see used in welding. It has a purity of around 99.96%. Depending on the metal, argon gas is mixed with other gases to simulate

Argon gas placed between twin glass panes for insulation does go bad as seals fail and it is contaminated with air and water vapour, but the argon its self doesn't change or go bad. This doesn't happen in a HP Argon cylinder as long as intact seals contain Argon pressure they keep contaminates out.

The gasses don’t “go bad”, but in some cases, after an extended period on time set up in the vertical position, they will seperate, if they are a mixed gas. Argon-CO2 mixes, need to be layed down on the floor, and rolled around for a bit if you have not used them for extended periods. Read the full answer

There some truth in these posts, youll be fine welding with it, but yes it does displace air. Argon is a heavier than air gas, which means when it gets into your lungs, it sits at the bottom of your lungs and isnt exhaled.

Mix gas can go bad, but it takes a long time. Eventually the CO2 and the Argon can seperate and you can wind up with only Argon flowing. I've had a tank seperate when I didn't use it for about a year. If you get it cold enough, you could also liquify the CO2 and cause the same problem.

Since argon is a noble gas and not prone to react with other chemicals it will never go bad.

I have had probably 6 different gas suppliers in the 45 years I have had my own shop and have never gotten a bad tank of any kind of gas. anytime I have had an issue it was always welding equipment. moonlight machine , digger doug , steve-l , sealark37 liked this post

So some times the argon you think is good may not be. You may be struggling with welding when it is not you or your machine but the gas. Yes you can say I had bad gas.

Yes, GMAW wires can go bad if they do not have the right protection and maintenance. Generally, GMAW wires require a shielding gas, which is delivered from a pressurized gas tank, to protect the weld from atmospheric contaminants. Within this category, the two subcategories are solid GMAW wire and composite metal-cored GMAW wire.

“MIG,” short for metal inert gas, actually tells a lot about this method of welding. It actually requires gas for shielding: the gas involved in the welding process prevents the molten welding pool from interacting with the surrounding gases in the air.
