What is tracer wire? Tracer wire is also known as locating wire or locator wire because it locates pipelines or pipe after burial. When laying PE pipe in the ground, tracer wire is buried alongside the pipeline. If the line needs repair or maintenance, an underground wire tracer or above-ground wire detector can locate the non-energized pipe.

A. Install tracer wire along the pipe above or to the side of the pipe. Contact with the pipe is allowed but shall be minimized. Recommended 2” – 6” separation. B. Install tracer wire as a single continuous wire. Splicing of wire, if necessary, shall be done in such a way to produce an electrically and mechanically sound joint.

A coated copper clad steel tracer wire of #12 gauge (or larger) ( KUB item # 300362) shall be installed with all buried plastic mains and services. The tracer wire shall be laid within 6 inches of the plastic pipe where practical and directly above if possible. Tracer wire should not be wrapped around pipe or connectors except at the riser.

Product Overview. The HOME-FLEX 100 ft. Tracer Wire is used when burying underground yellow poly gas pipe. Allows for detection of the underground gas pipe. Bury along-side pipe in the trench and up the risers. Meets code at 14-Gauge size.

Underground Tracer Wire Underground tracer wire, also referred to as electrical wire tracer or locator wire, is the type of tracer wire used for direct burial applications. Contractors, gas and oil distributors, water and sewage departments, telecommunications companies and more all must utilize electrical tracer wire in order to locate underground piping and other non-traceable lines before digging.

Wal-rich 1842500 - Yellow Burial Tracer Wire, 14 Gauge (500 ft.) - Use yellow tracer wire in the trench along PE gas pipe for an effective, code compliant installation. Tracer wire is designed for direct contact with the soil. Features Solid copper conductor with a yellow high molecular weight polyethylene insulation.

Tracer Wire: while used in general purpose wiring circuits, machine tools, and appliances, tracer wire’s primary use is to locate buried water/gas pipes and fiber optic cables. That’s why it is often referred to as underground locator, locating wire, electric wire tracer and more.

This is generally accomplished with the utilization of a tracer wire. Here is how the 2011 edition of the National Fire Protection Association Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code addresses the matter: 6.9.4.6 (A)(B) An electrically continuous corrosion-resistant tracer wire (minimum AWG14) or tape shall be buried with a polyamide or polyethylene pipe to facilitate locating the pipe.
