While not nearly the 2000m3 Jean Pain harvested, 20m3 of methane is still the equivalence of 90kwh. The compost itself, the land management, and heating water are also all still valuable outputs a farm of any size will appreciate, even without scaling a system up to produce large amounts of methane.

In the Savoie, Chambery began to use Jean Pain's method in January 1980. A 200-cubic-metre compost bed, made of broken wood from plane trees and lime trees, will supply 23,400 kilocalories an hour and heat a 200 square-metre hot-house. Within two years, it will be possible to salvage 80 cubic metres of humus for the community gardens.

The Jean Pain method converts wood chips into methane (which can be used to create electricity), heat, and compost. We dream of someday leaving the mainstream electricity grid behind and becoming energy independent.

The Methane Middenwas my first attempt to recreate, on a significantly smaller scale, Jean Pain’s Epic Compostpiles that he used to heat everything from his house, to greenhouses, to sheds, and he even buried methane digesters in them. He worked on these projects for over a decade and did some truly Epic Shit.

Jean Pain (12 December 1928 – 30 July 1981) was a Swiss -born French inventor and innovator who developed the compost heater, a compost -based bioenergy system, that produced 100% of his energy needs. He heated water to 60 °C (140 °F) at a rate of 4 litres per minute (0.88 imp gal/min; 1.1 US gal/min) which he used for washing and heating.

Jean Pain extracted hot water from his 18′ diameter, 9ft high pile for 18 months. In the picture below you can see Jean, his methane storage tubes in foreground and the compost pile in the background. Peter Bane of the Permaculture Activist has also written a great article on Jean.

In addition to heating water using compost, Jean also distilled methane to run a generator, a stove, and fuel his vehicle. The work he did is still viable today. Sometimes known as Jean Pain Composting or the Jean Pain Method, we can learn a lot from the work of this Frenchman about resiliency.

Gas in your digestive system is part of the normal process of digestion. Getting rid of excess gas, either by burping or passing gas (flatus), also is normal. Gas pain may occur if gas is trapped or not moving well through your digestive system. An increase in gas or gas pain may result from eating foods that are more likely to produce gas.

Methane is a one-carbon compound in which the carbon is attached by single bonds to four hydrogen atoms. It is a colourless, odourless, non-toxic but flammable gas (b.p. -161℃). It has a role as a fossil fuel, a member of greenhouse gas and a bacterial metabolite.
However, methane that is released into the atmosphere before it is burned is harmful to the environment. Because it is able to trap heat in the atmosphere, methane contributes to climate change. Although methane’s lifespan in the atmosphere is relatively short compared to those of other greenhouse gases, it is more efficient at trapping heat than are those other gases.

Methane is nontoxic on its own but can become lethal when it combines with another gas. Methane causes asphyxiation by displacing oxygen. It may produce symptoms of dizziness and headache , but these often go unnoticed until the brain signals the body to gasp for air. This happens too late, and the individual collapses.

Methane clathrate (CH 4 ·5.75H 2 O) or (4CH 4 ·23H 2 O), also called methane hydrate, hydromethane, methane ice, fire ice, natural gas hydrate, or gas hydrate, is a solid clathrate compound (more specifically, a clathrate hydrate) in which a large amount of methane is trapped within a crystal structure of water, forming a solid similar to ice.
High levels of methane can reduce the amount of oxygen breathed from the air. This can result in mood changes, slurred speech, vision problems, memory loss, nausea, vomiting, facial flushing and headache. In severe cases, there may be changes in breathing and heart rate, balance problems, numbness, and unconsciousness.

Ruminant livestock – cattle, sheep, buffalo, goats, deer and camels – have a fore-stomach (or rumen) containing microbes called methanogens, which are capable of digesting coarse plant material and which produce methane as a by-product of digestion (enteric fermentation): this methane is released to the atmosphere by the animal belching.

The IPCC report states that methane increases in our atmosphere account for only about one sixth of the total effect of well-mixed greenhouse gases on warming. Part of the reason the new calculations give a larger effect is that they include the effect methane has on air pollution.
Open surgery with longer incisions and laparoscopic surgery in the abdominal cavity can leave the bowels (intestines) "stunned." Anesthesia (general, as well as epidural and spinal) can slow down the bowels, preventing the passage of gas and stool. Pain medications (narcotic) add to and contribute this effect.
