Choosing to turn on a gas fireplace or a gas furnace really depends on what you want to accomplish. Usually it is more fuel efficient to have the fireplace on because it doesn’t lose any heat traveling through ductwork, but that also means the heat is localized and won’t warm the entirety of a large house.
- Electric furnaces convert nearly all of their energy into heat, while gas furnaces can vary. Gas furnaces generally heat homes more quickly than electric furnaces, despite lower efficiency. Higher efficiency can be gained in a gas furnace with an alternative to the traditional pilot light such as an intermittent, direct spark, or hot surface ignition.

A furnace vent is either a flue, draft fan or an external vent that is responsible for removing combustion gases from your furnace. The question is, “does a gas furnace use electricity?” If you are using a gas furnace for heating, then the only electrical cost will be what is required to operate the fan motor and the igniter. The igniter lights the flame and only fires for a brief time; this is the clicking sound that you can hear if you are very near the furnace at startup. The electrical usage for ignition is negligible.
The electricity usage of electric furnaces ranges from 10 kilowatts to 50 kilowatts. Let’s say you own a 20 kWh electric furnace which you use for 2 hours per day.
