Tri mix gas for stainless steel MIG welding. For years I've been getting by doing repair welding on stainless exhaust systems using 308L wire and an 80/20 Argon CO2 mix. It does OK for repairs to stainless systems that have been in use for awhile and for installing new weld in catalytic converters.

HELIUM TRI-MIX, A RIDICULOUS GAS MIX CHOICE FOR SIXTY YEARS: The Carbide MIG gas solution for stainless gage welds for weld shops that often were dealing with weld heat related issues, was to promote and sell the worlds "HOTTEST MIG gas Tri-mix". The Tri-mix containing 90% helium - 7.5% Argon - 2.5% CO2 requires the highest MIG weld voltages, which for 60 years has ensured more energy into the thin MIG welds than any of the other available MIG gas mix.

In some cases there is tri-mix shielding gas containing 90% Helium, 7.5% Argon, and 2.5%Carbon dioxide. Again many welding supply stores carry their own mixture that can improve the weld quality and ease of welding on stainless steel. Stainless Steel MIG weld done with C2 gas.

A “tri-mix” of helium, argon, and CO2 is also sometimes used. This mix of gas is ideal for stainless steel welding, as it ensures a steady, strong, and deep weld. Carbon Dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a “semi-inert” gas that is relatively resistant to chemical change, but to a lower extent than inert gasses like argon and helium.

This tri-mix blend has been developed for spray and pulsed spray arc welding of both Carbon and Low-Alloy Steels. It can be used on all thicknesses in any position. This high-speed blend will produce higher quality welds over rust, oil, and mill scale than conventional two-part mixtures.

Because of stainless steel’s poor thermal conductivity and the relatively “cool” nature of short circuit transfer gas metal arc welding (GMAW), this process requires a “trimix” gas that contains a blend of 85 to 90 per cent helium (He), up to 10 per cent argon (Ar) and 2 to 5 per cent carbon dioxide (CO 2).

I use tri mix all the time with stainless wire. It definitely adds heat to the weld. If you use 80/20 with stainless wire the welds are way too cold and do not wet out. Using tri mix with mild steel makes the weld puddle flow a little too much for my taste but it works just fine and you will get used to it.

Tri Mix gas (90% Helium, 7.5% Argon, 2.5% Carbon Dioxide) protects and shields your weld. While your stainless steel melts in your arc. And it allows your MIG welder to produce the right kind of electrical arc to weld your stainless steel.

Stainless Tri-Mix gas is used for exactly what it says, welding stainless steel metal. However, not all stainless steel metal is meant for welding. Typically a 304 or 304L grade stainless works the best for welding while other types of stainless are only good for bending and forming.

MIG Welding Gas for Stainless Steel Welding Welding of stainless steel is typically done with C2 or 2% Carbon Dioxide and 98% Argon. In some cases there is tri-mix shielding gas containing 90% Helium, 7.5% Argon, and 2.5%Carbon dioxide.
MIG Welding Gas for Carbon Steel Welding Welding of carbon steel can be done with Carbon Dioxide alone and it produces the deepest penetration, the most smoke and the roughest weld. The most widely used mixture is called C25 and that is 25% Carbon Dioxide and 75% Argon gas.

You can choose aluminum to MIG weld with “Self-Shielded Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW-S)” wires. You should adjust the settings and use wires with “low crack sensitivity” to minimize porosity, cracking, and other defects. Apply the push method and fix wire feed issues as well.
TIG welding primarily employs inert gas for a neat finish and no oxidation, while if an inert gas is used entirely for MIG welding, it could spoil the view of the finished weld. MIG welding can withstand semi-inert gas, as it assists with the welding process. However, semi-inert gas has a destructive effect on the TIG weld.
