Tri mix gas for stainless steel MIG welding. For years I've been getting by doing repair welding on stainless exhaust systems using 308L wire and an 80/20 Argon CO2 mix. It does OK for repairs to stainless systems that have been in use for awhile and for installing new weld in catalytic converters.

Even if it is removed, often you can see the outline of the nasty old Cr2O3 crust when this gas is used. On multi-pass, it gets bad quick, and even a 3 pass weld has vast chances of inclusions, LOF, etc. Theres plenty of recommendations on the web for 1-2% O2 mixes.

I use tri mix all the time with stainless wire. It definitely adds heat to the weld. If you use 80/20 with stainless wire the welds are way too cold and do not wet out. Using tri mix with mild steel makes the weld puddle flow a little too much for my taste but it works just fine and you will get used to it.
