9 – Gas Motor. Most people are going to need a gas kicker (trolling motor), so I disregard the need for the disproportionate amount of extra thrust provided by a 36-volt motor because you already have the 9.9hp gas motor for all the extra thrust you may need. I run a 24-volt trolling motor on my boat, and I rarely use my gas kicker.

#1. Trolling Motor (Thrust) vs Outboard (Horsepower) Searching for thrust to hp in order to get a proper electric replacement for your gas outboard, right? Be minded that all the electric trolling motors measured by pounds of thrust (lbs) are much less powerful than the regular outboard, usually with less than 2 horsepower.

Many past and present Newport Vessels customers have asked us to convert the pounds of thrust specification for Newport Vessels trolling motors into horsepower specification that is common for gas motors and cars. First, pounds of thrust is a static force measurement while horsepower is 550 ft-pounds of work per second, a measurement per unit time.

While most people think of gas-powered, outboard motors (which are classified by their horsepower), electric trolling motors are classified by their pounds per thrust. This measurement, combined with the motor’s voltage (12 volt, 24 volt, and 26 volt), will determine how quickly and precisely your boat will move through the water.

higher voltage = higher thrust Trolling motor models are available in either 12v, 24v or 36v. As a guide 12v or 55lbs of power and 24v/80lbs. The more powerful options offer more than 100lbs of power, strong enough to suit bigger, heavier boats.

Coming in third on our list is the Intex Trolling Motor for Intex Inflatable Boats. The motor features enough power to carry four people on a boat. With 40 lbs of thrust, it’s strong enough to be used on most inflatable boats under 16 feet. An advantage that consumers noticed firsthand is its acceleration.

As we mentioned, Trolling motors come in 12v, 24v and 36v variants. The higher the voltage, the greater the thrust. A 12v motor requires one dedicated battery, a 24v requires 2 dedicated batteries and a 36v requires...you guessed it, 3 dedicated batteries. In general terms voltage/thrust ratios are as follows:

Unlike outboard motors that have the power expressed in horsepower, the power of a trolling motor is expressed in pounds of thrust. However, figuring out how powerful the motor should be is easy. As a rule of thumb, you’ll need about 2 pounds of thrust for every 100 pounds of fully loaded boat (people and gear included).
